Two Women In Their Time: The Belarus Free Theatre and the Art of Resistance by Misha Friedman & Masha Gessen
The internationally acclaimed underground theatre company, Belarus Free Theatre, has been trying to attract attention to Europe’s “last dictatorship” for the past 20 years. Its directors were exiled to London, and have been touring the world to much critical acclaim. In Belarus itself, two brave women - Svetlana and Nadezhda - have been running it. This is their story.
In autumn 2017, Belarus Free Theatre took New York by storm for a production of their harrowing anti-torture, anti-Putin play Burning Doors. Joined by Maria Alyokhina, a member of Russian punk group Pussy Riot, the play met with enthusiastic acclaim from critics.
Award-winning documentary photographer Misha Friedman and New Yorker reporter Masha Gessen take us backstage in New York, giving us an intimate look at this fiercely creative drama troupe that cannot officially perform in its homeland, and visit Minsk to meet with Sveta and Nadya.
